This live camera looks out over Akureyri, the largest town in northern Iceland and a gateway to the fjords and waterfalls of the region. Watch it to get a sense of the town's setting on Eyjafjörður before you travel, or to see what conditions look like right now. The stream is provided by its owner and embedded here with a link to the source.
Akureyri sits at the head of Eyjafjörður, one of the longest fjords in Iceland, and is often called the capital of the north. Its compact centre climbs a slope above the harbour, with colourful houses, a botanical garden and a church that is visible from far out on the water. The town is known as a base for whale watching, hiking and visits to the Goðafoss waterfall and Lake Mývatn. Its position between mountains and sea gives it a mild climate for the latitude.
Depending on the view, you may see the fjord, the surrounding mountains and the changing light of the Arctic sky. Iceland's weather can shift quickly, so cloud cover, snow and fog are worth watching for. Many visitors check the view in the early morning or late evening, when low sun angles bring out the colours of the hills. In winter the light is short and the view often changes from hour to hour.
Summers are cool, with long daylight hours, and winters are cold but generally milder than their latitude suggests thanks to the Gulf Stream. June to August is the most popular time to visit. Akureyri has an airport with domestic flights, and the Ring Road connects it to Húsavík and Mývatn. Nearby cameras cover Húsavík harbour and the Siglufjörður port, which are useful for comparing conditions along the north coast.
