This live camera looks out over the Bay of Spiez on the northern shore of Lake Thun in the Bernese Oberland. It is a useful window onto the lake's mood, from calm morning water to wind-whipped afternoons. The page also shows local time and the current forecast so you can judge conditions before heading down.
Spiez sits at the southern end of Lake Thun, where the water narrows and the Alps rise steeply on both sides. The town is best known for its medieval castle on a hill above the shore and for its lakeside promenades. The bay is sheltered in parts, which makes it a popular place for families and for boats of all sizes. The surrounding hills and the snow-capped peaks beyond give the lake a distinctly alpine character.
The view is most rewarding in clear weather, when the mountains reflect in the lake and the light changes across the water. Early mornings often bring the calmest surface, while afternoons can bring breeze and small waves, especially when wind comes along the valley. In summer the shore fills with swimmers and sailors, whereas in winter you are more likely to see quiet water and the hills dusted with snow. Conditions depend on the view and the weather, so the picture may show anything from bright sun to low cloud.
Spiez has a temperate climate with warm summers and cold, often snowy winters, and the lake keeps the nearby air fairly mild in autumn. The best months for swimming and boating are usually June to September. The town is reached easily by train from Bern and Interlaken and has regular boat services on the lake. Nearby cameras cover Gunten and Sigriswil across the water, and the Heiligenschwendi view is a short drive uphill.
