This live camera looks out from the Jiantanshan Weifeng Observatory over the Taipei basin. It is useful for checking how the city looks right now, from the low clouds and haze of the morning to the lights that come on after dark. The stream is provided by the Taipei travel authority's official channel.
Jiantanshan is a low, wooded hill on the northern side of Taipei, rising only about 100 metres above the river plain. The observatory sits at its summit and gives an open view across the dense blocks of the city towards the surrounding ridges. Taipei is one of the most densely built capitals in East Asia, and from this height you can see how the mountains close in on it from several sides. The area is known for its hiking paths and for the cooler air of the hillside compared with the streets below.
The camera is most rewarding in the early morning, when the air is often clearer and the city sits under a soft layer of cloud. Late afternoon brings warm light onto the rooftops, and after sunset the grid of streets and the lit towers stand out clearly. Weather changes the picture quickly, so a bright afternoon can turn grey within an hour. Watching for a few minutes is usually enough to judge the visibility and the sky over the basin.
Taipei has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and a wetter season in the cooler months, so the spring and autumn tend to be the most comfortable times to visit the hill in person. Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk the trails. If you want to compare views from around the city, the Dadaocheng Wharf camera, the Bishan Temple camera and the Top of Xiangshan camera are all within a short distance of this location.
