This camera looks at the Silverado Franklin Historic Hotel and Gaming Complex in Deadwood, a former gold-rush town in the Black Hills. Watch the live stream to see the street activity and general conditions before you plan a visit or check on the weather in town.
Deadwood grew up during the 1870s gold rush and became one of the most notorious frontier towns in the American West. It sits in a narrow valley in the northern Black Hills at roughly 1,330 metres above sea level, surrounded by pine forest and granite ridges. Much of the historic downtown has been preserved, and legal gambling was introduced in 1989, which shaped the town's character ever since.
The picture is aimed at the Silverado Franklin, a historic hotel and gaming complex on the main street. Depending on the view, you may see passing traffic, pedestrians and the facade of the old buildings. Activity is usually busiest in the evening and on weekends, and the town looks especially atmospheric when snow settles on the rooftops in winter or when the late light catches the hillsides.
Winters are cold and snowy, while summers are warm and dry, with afternoon thunderstorms possible in June and July. The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn. Deadwood is close to Terry Peak, a ski area about 10 km away, and Spearfish lies about 15 km to the south, so the nearby cameras offer useful views of the wider region.
