This live camera looks toward Devils Tower, the striking volcanic monolith rising above the Wyoming prairie. It is a good way to check how the tower looks right now and whether clouds or haze are settling over the Black Hills area before you plan a visit.
Devils Tower stands near the northeastern edge of the Black Hills in northeastern Wyoming. It is a tall columnar rock formation of igneous origin, rising sharply from grassland and pine-dotted slopes. It became the first United States national monument in 1906 and is widely known for its ridged columns and its place in Native American traditions and popular culture. The surrounding area is open, quiet country with wide skies.
The camera is aimed at the tower from the Trading Post, so the tower is the main subject of the view. Light changes its appearance a great deal: early morning and late afternoon bring out the texture of the columns, while cloud shadows can move across the slopes on windy days. Depending on the season, you may also see green summer grass, autumn colors, or snow on the ground. Check the live view during different times of day to compare conditions.
Northeastern Wyoming has a continental climate with warm summers, cold winters, and considerable day-to-day variation. Late spring through early autumn is the most popular period for visits, while winter roads can be icy. The live weather block on this page shows current conditions and a short forecast. Nearby cameras in the region include Sundance near Warren Peak and the views around Spearfish and Gillette, which give a wider picture of the area.
