This live camera looks out from the Perlan landmark on Öskjuhlíð hill over the Icelandic capital. It is a good way to check the state of the city and the sky before heading out, and the page adds local time and weather so you can judge conditions at a glance.
Perlan sits on the wooded hill of Öskjuhlíð, just southeast of Reykjavík's centre. Its glass dome was built on top of large hot water storage tanks, which is why the building is so closely tied to the city's geothermal heating. From this height the southern part of the capital opens up toward the bay and the surrounding mountains, giving a clear sense of how compact and close to nature Reykjavík is.
The south-facing camera is useful for following the mood of the city and the weather moving in from the Atlantic. Light changes quickly in Iceland, so the view can shift from clear to grey within minutes. Late autumn and winter evenings are especially interesting when the sky is dark enough to watch for the northern lights, though visibility depends on cloud cover and local light.
Reykjavík has a subpolar oceanic climate, with cool summers, mild but windy winters and frequent rain at any time of year. Summer offers long daylight hours and is the easiest season for walking around the city. Perlan is a short walk or bus ride from the centre, and the other Perlan cameras to the west, north and east show different parts of the same surroundings.
