This camera looks out from the glass dome of Perlan, the hilltop landmark above Reykjavík, toward the north side of the city. It is a quick way to check how the capital looks right now, including cloud cover, light and visibility over the rooftops and the bay area beyond.
Perlan stands on Öskjuhlíð, a wooded hill in the south-east of Reykjavík, close to the city centre. The building houses a planetarium, exhibition spaces and a rotating observation level, and it is one of the best-known viewpoints in Iceland's capital. Reykjavík is the northernmost capital in the world and sits on a low, open coast where weather changes quickly and the sky often looks wide and dramatic.
The northern view covers the city's roofs, the surrounding neighbourhoods and the water beyond, depending on the visibility on the day. Clear conditions make the light most interesting in the early morning and late evening, and in winter the low sun can throw long shadows across the town. Cloud and wind often change the scene within minutes, so checking again after an hour can show a very different picture.
Reykjavík has a mild maritime climate for its latitude, with cool summers and winters that are wet and windy rather than extremely cold. Summer days are long, while winter days are short and the weather is best checked before going out. The nearby Perlan west, east and south cameras show other directions from the same building, and the city centre is within easy walking or short bus distance.
