This camera looks out eastward over Iceland's capital from the Perlan, the glass-domed landmark on Öskjuhlíð hill. It is a quick way to check how the city and the surrounding bay look right now. Many people watch it before planning a trip or a walk along the shore.
Perlan stands on the wooded hill of Öskjuhlíð, a short distance south of the city centre. The building sits on large hot water tanks, and its glass dome has become a familiar symbol of Reykjavík. From this height the city spreads toward the harbour and the open water of the bay, with mountains and sky shaping the horizon. The landscape is shaped by volcanic ground and a northern coastline, which gives the light a clear, shifting quality through the year.[...]
An eastern view tends to show the lower town, the water and the layers of cloud moving in from the sea. Clear days bring out the outlines of the surrounding hills, while stormy weather can change the scene within minutes. Long summer evenings give soft light well after midday, and winter views are shorter but can be sharp after a cold, dry spell. Conditions depend on the weather, so the live picture is the best guide to what you will see.[...]
Reykjavík has a cool maritime climate, with mild winters for its latitude and summers that rarely become hot. Wind and rain are common in every season, so layers and waterproofs are useful. The Perlan is a short bus or taxi ride from the centre, and the nearby northern, western and southern cameras show other directions over the same city, which helps you judge the weather across the area.[...]

The camera is mounted at the Perlan on Öskjuhlíð hill in eastern Reykjavík and looks east over the city. Its exact position is shown on the map on this page.
Clear days give the sharpest view, and the long summer evenings offer soft light for much of the day. Winter daylight is short, so the view is most useful in the late morning and early afternoon.
